H olly watched as Odin threw the flame onto the boat holding Sif’s body. Tears fresh on her cheeks as the greatest warrior she had ever known went to her final resting place. The Halls of Valhalla to feast until she was called back to Odin’s side for battles in the afterlife. Sif had been her friend, her mentor, her shield maiden and her sister in all but blood. She could not remember a time when Sif had not been there for her since Holly’s parents had died.

This was the strangest funeral. Something felt off yet again. Sif was dead, she knew that. She felt it deep inside. An ache where their friendship had once been. That was not what made things feel wrong. Thor was still missing. He hadn’t been back to Asgard since Sif’s death. Not claimed the body or sat through her rituals of passing. Sure, the spouses had their fair share of arguments and the odd indiscretion, but they were truly in love from what she had seen. They were married, how could he not be at her funeral grieving her passing?

If it had been Holly’s own spouse that had passed, it would have been a burden she would carry with pride and honour. A distance image came to her mind of her own form weeping openly at her partners funeral. Leaving her dizzy, confused and a little on edge. Impossible, she was Odin’s virgin Valkyrie. She had never taken a lover, and never would. Something that did leave her a little sad. To refuse Odin’s call to be his warrior, at his side in battles for her lifetime, would have made her an outcast.

Still, she couldn’t help but wonder what her life would have been like if she had been allowed to find herself love. If she would be one of those couples all cuddled up around the burning boat so wrapped up in themselves that nothing else mattered. Even if it was wildly inappropriate at a funeral of all places! Holly snuck to the fringes of the feast after the boat was long out of sight. Drinking and eating her grief away was not her way of dealing with trauma. Even if every other inhabitant of Asgard felt differently to her. A small plate of food and a small horn of mead later, Holly made her excuses to leave. Finding her way to a small, deserted courtyard where she could train.

Holly needed to try to train out her emotions. The drill she was thinking of should really be done with a sword, not the much lighter dagger she currently had at her belt, but for now the repetitive actions of the drill would take her mind off the current chaotic insanity of her life. Cover, cover, cut, cut, cover, cover, cut, cut. Muscle memory moving her through the drill allowing her mind to wander elsewhere. Before long it wandered to a half-remembered dream.

“Widen your stance”.

She heard a ghost of a memory tell her.

“I could knock that leg clean out from under you.
